The Drop Shot Rig Secret Finesse Anglers Know (But Nobody Teaches at the Beginner Level)
By Always 80 and Sunny ·
The drop shot rig is one of the most effective presentations for cold-water bass fishing, and it's surprisingly simple to master. This finesse technique works when other presentations fail, and once you understand the mechanics, you'll use it year-round.
Proper Rigging: Use 6-8 pound fluorocarbon leader (10-12 pound main line). Tie a small barrel swivel at the end of your main line. Attach a 1/16 to 1/8 ounce weight below the swivel. Above the weight, tie in your plastic bait (typically 3-4 inches) using a Palomar knot. The drop shot gets its name because you're literally dropping the weight to the bottom and fishing your bait above it, where fish suspend. Leave 12-18 inches of line between your bait and weight.
Technique and Rod Setup: A 6 to 6.5 foot medium-light rod with a sensitive tip works best for drop shotting. You need feel to detect subtle bites. Cast beyond your target, let it sink to bottom, then make small hops and subtle shakes. The key is vertical awareness-you're feeling for bottom contact and adjusting your weight accordingly. Many fish bite on the drop, so stay in contact with your line.
Presentation Styles: Deadstick presentations (minimal movement) work great when fish are lethargic. Gentle twitches with 2-3 inch pops are better when you want more action. Experiment with both approaches at the same location. Our custom soft plastics in natural colors like green pumpkin and watermelon seed are excellent drop shot baits because their subtle details appeal to pressured winter fish.
