Fall Walleye Transitions: The Depth Change That Triggers Explosive Bite Windows

By Always 80 and Sunny ·

Fall walleye fishing often gets overlooked, but early autumn (September-early October) offers some of the best walleye opportunities of the year. The water temps are dropping from summer highs, walleye are aggressive, and they haven't yet moved into tight winter patterns.

Location Strategy: Walleye in fall move from deeper summer haunts toward mid-depth structure. Look for them at 12-18 feet around points, weed edges, and current breaks. They'll make daily migrations from deeper water onto shallower structure to feed, particularly around dawn and dusk. If you locate the midpoint between their deep and shallow zones, you've found the sweet spot.

Presentation Techniques: Jigs and soft plastics outperform other presentations right now. A 3/8 ounce jig with a 3-4 inch soft plastic in natural colors works exceptionally well. Vertical presentations directly over structure are more efficient than casting and retrieving. If you find walleye on sonar, precisely jig them rather than searching with crankbaits.

Timing Considerations: Low-light conditions remain productive, but fall walleye are less nocturnal than summer fish. Overcast days produce action throughout the day. Clear, bright days concentrate bites in early morning and late evening. Moon phase matters-full moons create good daytime fishing. New moons mean you'll struggle midday but evenings should be excellent.

Early Fall vs. Late Fall: Early fall is aggressive and consistent. By late October-November, walleye have moved deeper and become more selective. Shift gradually deeper throughout fall, following the fish as they migrate. Understanding this progression prevents wasting time in locations where fish have already moved past.
